Waterless Valentine Globes

Tuesday, January 31, 2012
Remember these lovelies from my Winter Decorations?
Waterless Snow Globes a la Anthropologie.  They were all over Pinterest and craftblogland this winter.  Love them!  So much that I decided to make a Valentine version : )

I used these heart picks from the Dollar Tree
Plus a few empty jars, with lids, some florist foam, ribbon and lace trim, and sparkle snow flakes.  They are so quick and easy to put together!  Here's how...

Hold your heart pick next to your jar and see how tall it needs to be.  Then cut or break the stick to the right length.  I painted mine white...and when that only made the stick pink, I then wrapped white tissue paper around it.  I don't know why I wanted them white, but I did.

I used a plastic knife to saw a chunk of florist foam to fit the lid of my jar, and shaped it slightly.  Then I hot glued it to the underside of the lid.
I put hot glue on the end of the heart pick and poked it down in the center of the foam until it hit bottom.  Then I covered up the foam with hot glue and loose polyfil stuffing.
Turn your jar right-side up and put a few pinches of sparkly stuff in.  This sparkle snow is what I used, leftover from Christmas crafting.
Then you carefully invert the lid, with your decorations attached, and screw it on.
Shake it up and flip it over.  The sparkle will stick to the heart and the sides of the glass a little bit.  This is all part of the charm!  It also covers up your polyfill.  Easy peasy!
Hot glue ribbon around the rim of the jar and you're done!  I also added lace trim on mine, just where the jar starts to curve in.
I made my second one a double, but then had to trim almost up to that pretty notch I worked so hard on, to fit it inside my jar.  It was more tricky getting the double inverted into the jar, but there was just enough flexibility to work with.

I raised one on an upside-down glass on the mantel, to stagger their heights.  I love how they turned out!
These literally took about 5 minutes to make.  The longest part was waiting for the hot glue gun to heat up...that and waiting till dinner the next day so I could use that empty spaghetti sauce jar ; )  All I spent was the $1 on the bag of heart picks - the rest of it I already had.  WOOT for thrifty/use-whatcha-got crafting!
P.S.  You can see the post for that tissue rosette kissing ball here.

I enjoy responding personally to your comments, too. * I had been responding to comments via email, but so many were no-reply addresses that I have switched to making all replies right here on the blog.
