This week on Fun Jar Friday ~
Jello Blood Worms
Okay, we all know I have boys. So, making worms out of Jello that look just like worms rings into my mommy brain as totally awesome! But, I understand if you are totally grossed out by this. Six years ago, I would have been too. That said, this is a perfect Halloween Fun Jar activity!
I wish I could pin point the one site that showed me these, but it's all over the place.
So, someone out there came up with this and I thank them!

Here's what you need
one 4-serving box of raspberry jello
3 packets of unflavored gelatin
3 cups boiling water
3/4 cup whipping cream
5 drops of green food coloring
a bunch of bendy straws (the more straws, the more real it looks)
tall, thin container (the skinnier the container, the longer the worm)
First, pull all the bendy straws to their fullest length.
Gather them with the bendy side down and wrap a rubber band or string around them.
Place them bendy side down into the container.
Place them bendy side down into the container.
In a large bowl (preferably with a pouring side) mix together the jello and gelatin packets.
Add the boiling water and let cool for 15 minutes.

Stir in whipping cream. Add drops of food coloring. I've read to add 10 drops, but have also heard that it makes it grey, so I only added 5. Just until it makes a "worm like" color.
Pour the mixture over the top of the straws. It won't all go in the straws, but it's fine.
Put in the fridge to chill for 8 hours. When it's firm, remove the straws.
If they don't budge, run warm water over the sides.

To get the worms out start at the top of each straw, I first slid the jello off the outside of the straw into the sink. Then, pinch the straw and slide your fingers to the bottom.
The worm should slide right out with them! This is a great step for dad to help with because your fingers will hurt after awhile. Keep chilled until ready to serve!

These are super gross, but in a good way! I have two boys too and think they would get a kick out of these. My daughter, not so sure.;) thanks for the idea! Have a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteMake your daughter some cute jello pinwheels and everyone will be happy! http://www.joyofjello.com/?p=1085 And you never know, she just might try a worm just for the heck of it, even if she is less than amused. =)
