This week I decided to show you the decorations I did for my son's class and his
Spooky Science Party
This year, the class has been blessed with 4 room mom's. It was decided that we would have a "spooky science" party and I was given the job of decorations. I had quite a bit of fun with this.
There are lots of little details to this and I'll walk you through each piece. Non of which are very difficult.
Let's start with the
Activities
I didn't have any part in the activities (surprising, I know!) But I did what I could to fancy them up. Each 1st grade class visits the room and does the activity. We have 15 minutes per class. To go with the theme, at one station, they are doing dry ice bubbles. Can't wait to see this!
At the other station, they are doing a Halloween Feel Box. You know, where you blindly
put your hands in to feel peeled grape eyeballs or spaghetti guts.
put your hands in to feel peeled grape eyeballs or spaghetti guts.
I made some labels for each of the compartments, which I am providing for you as printables.
Some ideas for this are
Eyeballs - peeled grapes
Guts - spaghetti
Teeth - dried corn
Brains - jello or damp sponge
Skin - tortilla
Finger Bones - carrots
Maggots - cooked rice or curly noodles
I decided to make a cute sign as well for the feel box.
Like my little friend? Here's how you make him!
I started with a unfinished wood sign. It's $1 a Hobby Lobby. I painted it purple to match the decor.
I used a technique I learned from Jaimee to let it dry. A few thumbtacks will raise it enough to let both sides dry.
Pick out a paper that works with your decor and cut it to fit. Apply some mod podge to the wood. My trick to mod podge is to apply it thick and quick. Paint it on and place the paper on it. Then, I use a credit card or library card to scrape out any air bubbles. If the card is activated, wipe it off quickly after scrapping. I have no idea what affect the mod podge will have on it! That's why I use a library card.
Let it dry at least 15 minutes. Then apply another layer of mod podge
over the entire paper. Let dry another 15 minutes.
Print out your sign phrase. If you have a printer that uses water resistant ink (like Epson's Dura Brite) then you are fine. If not, spray your paper with fixative. Then cut the words out.
Apply some more mod podge and place your words down. Use your finger to press down the pieces, covering the entire area. You can use the card, but the smaller piece might cause more mess.
Let dry another 15 minutes and then cover it all with another layer.
When that is done, glue some plastic spiders with hot glue.
I found the skeleton at the dollar store. He makes a great sign holder.
Next comes the
Specimen Jars
I thought a few jar full of severed body parts would be perfect to go with the feel box.
So I picked up a few body parts at the dollar store.
I did an all call on facebook for neighbors who had mason jars. So it was easy
and cheap to come up with them! Spaghetti jars work too.
First, I filled the jars with water.
Then. I squirted food coloring into the jars. I used one squirt of green and two squirts of yellow per jar.
Doesn't that look cool?
Then, put the body parts in the water. I really wanted to figure out how to make
the fingers and eyes submerge, But I couldn't come up with anything.
After that, paint the lids black and you are done.
Lastly, we have
Food
I'm not really in charge of food either, but I did provide a couple things to help out.
At the party, we are filling plastic gloves with popcorn. But you can also make cute treat bags for your snacks. I made a few treat labels and provided you guys with the printables.
Just cut them out, fold over a ziplock bag and staple on.
Then I made some straw toppers.
These can also be made into cupcake toppers by taping a toothpick onto the back.
For straw toppers, use a hole punch to punch a hole into the nose. Slip it onto a straw.
And now you have all the parts to decorate the spooky science party!
Coming up, I will show you how to make my mini eye specimen party favor.
But for now, as promised, here are your printables.
Straw Toppers/ Cupcake Toppers
Treat Bag Toppers
Feel Box Labels
And here's a blank one in case you want to make your own labels!
